What We Did

Beautiful early Craftsman home in the Webster Park area with the original chimney still in place after 117 years. The original lime mortar had finally reached the end of its life — joints were widening, mortar pieces were on the roof. We restored the chimney using period-correct Type O lime-based mortar, color-matched to the original, with the same flush joint profile. The chimney now blends invisibly with the original work and is ready for another 50+ years.

Can you tuckpoint a chimney built before 1930?

Yes — and we use the right materials. Pre-1930s homes used lime-based mortars (Type O or K), which are softer and more breathable than modern Portland cement. Using modern mortar on historic bricks can actually crack them. We test original mortar composition and match it precisely.

How do you match the look of historic mortar?

Three steps: (1) test the original mortar to identify composition, (2) source matching aggregate (sand) — local sand often varies in color, (3) use mortar dye for fine color matching. We tool joints to match the original profile (flush, struck, V-groove, or beaded). Result: invisible repair.

Do historic homes need different chimney inspections?

Yes. Historic chimneys often have unique characteristics — original clay tile liners (or no liner at all), thicker masonry, and complex multi-flue arrangements. Our Level II inspections account for these features and provide documentation suitable for historic preservation requirements.

Can you preserve original architectural features during repair?

Absolutely. We work to preserve original brick, decorative caps, period chase covers, and architectural details whenever possible. Replacement is only when absolutely necessary, and we use period-appropriate replacement materials.
