Why High Ridge Chimneys Burn Through Liners
High Ridge (63049) is wood-burning country. Larger lots, more trees, and a lot of homes that use the fireplace or stove as a genuine heat source rather than a decoration. That changes the whole maintenance picture.
A hard-working wood flue deposits creosote, and creosote is both flammable and mildly corrosive. On an old, uninsulated masonry flue the gases cool as they rise, which makes them condense and deposit more creosote — a cycle that feeds itself. Add decades of that, and clay tiles crack, joints open, and the flue stops being a sealed path to the outside.
The fix is an insulated stainless steel liner. Insulation keeps the flue gases hot on the way up, so they draw properly and deposit far less creosote in the first place. It's the difference between fighting the problem every season and removing the cause.
While the top of the flue is open is also the right moment to fit a top-mount damper. The damper in your firebox is a cast iron plate resting on a cast iron frame — metal on metal, no gasket. It has never sealed, even when it was new. A top-mount damper closes against a silicone rubber gasket at the very top of the flue and genuinely seals: heated air stays in, and rain, leaves and animals stay out. It replaces your cap as well.
