Know Your Unit
Three main categories of gas fireplaces — each requires different service approaches.
Traditional gas fireplaces that vent through an existing chimney or B-vent flue. Combustion gases exit through the flue while drawing room air for combustion. Most common in older St. Louis homes where a wood-burning fireplace was converted to gas.
Service requirements: Annual cleaning, flue inspection, pilot/burner cleaning, draft testing.
Sealed-combustion units that draw outside air through one pipe and exhaust through another (typically through an exterior wall). The most efficient and safest gas fireplace type.
Most common in newer St. Louis homes built after 1995 — including most homes in Wentzville, O'Fallon, St. Peters, and newer Chesterfield/Ballwin developments.
Service requirements: Annual glass cleaning, burner inspection, vent termination check, sealed combustion verification.
Burn cleanly enough to release exhaust directly into the room. Higher efficiency but require careful room sizing and oxygen depletion sensors. More common in supplemental heating applications — basement bars, finished garages, screened porches.
Service requirements: Annual safety system test, oxygen depletion sensor verification, careful burner cleaning, room ventilation check.
We can identify your fireplace type during the first service visit. Manufacturer plates inside the firebox usually indicate the model number, and we'll explain what you have and what service it needs.
Diagnosis
If you have any of these symptoms, we can diagnose and repair — usually same-day.
Pilot won't stay lit, igniter clicks but no flame, or remote/switch doesn't activate. Usually thermocouple, thermopile, gas valve, or ignition module failure.
Pilot lights but extinguishes when you release the knob. Almost always a failed thermocouple — the safety sensor that signals "pilot is on, allow gas flow."
Whistling, popping, or rumbling sounds. Could indicate dirty burner ports, debris in venting, or gas pressure issues — all serviceable.
Any persistent gas odor is an emergency. Turn off the gas valve immediately and call us. Common causes: failed valve seals, loose connections, or pilot orifice problems.
Soot or black residue inside the firebox or on glass means improper combustion. Usually caused by dirty burners, log misplacement, or insufficient combustion air.
Small, yellow, or flickering flames instead of robust orange/blue. Often dust accumulation on burners, low gas pressure, or partially clogged orifices.
Preventive Service
The single best investment for keeping your gas fireplace running for 20+ years.
Most homeowners think gas fireplaces don't need maintenance because they don't produce creosote like wood-burning units. This is a costly misconception.
Gas fireplaces accumulate dust, lint, pet hair, spider webs, and debris on burner ports, sensors, and inside venting. Over years, this buildup causes:
Our standard $199-$299 tune-up covers everything needed to keep your unit running safely for the next year:
How We Work
Whether tune-up or repair, every gas fireplace service follows the same proven sequence.
Gas valve turned off, room ventilated, work area covered with drop cloths. Safety always first when working on gas equipment.
Multimeter, manometer, and combustion analyzer used to verify gas pressure, sensor outputs, and exhaust composition before any work begins.
Logs removed, burner assembly cleaned, sensors inspected, vent path checked. Photo documentation of any concerns.
Failed components replaced with OEM parts when available. We carry common parts on the truck — most repairs same-day.
Logs and components properly positioned, gas turned on, full operational test. Verify ignition, flame quality, and safety system response.
Carbon monoxide test inside and around the unit. Written report with all findings, work performed, and recommendations.
Real Work, Real Results
From standard prefab units to historic restorations — we service every type.

Local Expertise
Wentzville, O'Fallon, and St. Peters have unique gas fireplace dynamics. Here's what we see most often.
Most homes in St. Charles County built between 1995-2015 came with builder-grade prefab gas fireplaces — typically Heatilator, Majestic, or Lennox units installed during construction. These units were budget-priced, not premium.
What we see consistently:
In the rapidly-growing Wentzville Parkway and WingHaven communities, we see two main patterns:
The Mid Rivers Mall corridor and Highway 94 developments have older direct-vent units (mid-1990s) that are often nearing replacement age. We help homeowners decide between major repair vs full unit replacement based on age and cost.
Premium West County homes (Ladue, Frontenac, Town and Country) often have converted historic fireplaces — original wood-burning fireboxes with modern gas inserts. These require specialized service and we have the expertise for them.

Common Questions
Everything St. Louis homeowners ask about gas fireplace service.
Gas fireplace service in St. Louis ranges from $199 to $1,500+ depending on what's needed:
Annual tune-up: $199-$299
Pilot light repair: $250-$450
Thermocouple/thermopile replacement: $300-$500
Gas valve replacement: $600-$1,200
Full ignition rebuild: $800-$1,500
Free written estimates on all repairs.
Most common causes (in order):
1. Dead thermocouple or thermopile (the safety sensor)
2. Pilot light blown out or failed pilot orifice
3. Faulty gas valve
4. Weak or empty batteries (in remote-controlled units)
5. Tripped wall switch or breaker
6. Failed igniter module
We diagnose all of these with same-day service.
The CSIA and most manufacturers recommend professional service every 1-2 years.
Even though gas fireplaces don't produce creosote, they accumulate dust, lint, pet hair, and spider webs that can clog burner ports, sensors, and venting. Annual service catches small problems before they become expensive emergency repairs.
For homes with pets or in dusty environments, annual service is strongly recommended.
A complete tune-up includes:
• Cleaning of gas logs and burner assembly
• Inspection of pilot light and ignition system
• Thermocouple/thermopile testing with millivolt readings
• Gas pressure verification using calibrated manometer
• Vent integrity check
• Glass cleaning with manufacturer-approved cleaner
• Safety system testing
• Carbon monoxide leak test
• Burner media inspection (sand, embers, lava rock)
• Written report with photos
Basic cleaning of glass and visible surfaces is fine for homeowners.
However, gas fireplace internals require trained technicians. Working on gas connections, pilot assemblies, valves, or venting without proper training risks gas leaks, carbon monoxide buildup, fires, or explosions.
Professional annual service is well worth the cost for safety alone — and for many warranties to remain valid.
Vented gas fireplaces (B-vent or direct-vent): Exhaust combustion gases outside through a flue or pipe. Safer but less heat-efficient — much of the heat goes up the chimney.
Ventless (vent-free) units: Burn cleanly enough to release exhaust into the room. More efficient but require careful sizing for room volume and oxygen depletion sensors.
We service both types, but recommend vented systems for primary heating use due to better safety margins.
Component lifespans vary:
• Gas logs (decorative): 15-25 years
• Burner assembly: 15-20 years
• Thermocouples: 5-10 years
• Thermopiles: 5-10 years
• Gas valves: 15-25 years
• Glass panels: indefinite unless damaged
• Refractory panels: 15-25 years
With annual service, we catch components nearing failure before they leave you cold in the middle of winter.
Yes — full warranty coverage:
Workmanship: 2-year written warranty on all repair work
Parts: Manufacturer warranties (typically 1-5 years for ignition components, lifetime for some major valves)
We use OEM (original equipment manufacturer) parts whenever possible to maintain warranty validity.
